Throughout Chicago’s history, Black residents have played an integral role in cultivating the city’s vibrant culture. After all, Jean Baptiste Point du Sable—a Black man of Haitian descent—was the first non-Indigenous person to establish a permanent trading post in what would eventually be Chicago. Although it’s been centuries since the pioneer settled in the Chi, those trailblazing vibes continue to proliferate along the lakefront.
