Right in the thick of it, this compact boutique hotel sits on Monmouth Street, moments from the blockbuster sights such as Roman Baths and Royal Crescent as well as the city’s warren of cafes, galleries and boutiques. If you’re after a chic perch to flutter back to having scaled Baths’ crescents and cobblestone streets, the Yard is where to drop your bags. The 18th century coaching inn has been gently restored by its trendy owners Esther Newman and Ed Haskins whose presence ensures the warmth and character so many of these new boutique hotels so woefully lack. The design is subdued, with sages, creams, ochre and various earthy tones layered on with linens, wallpaper and upholstery. Pine for the room with a terracotta pot-lined roof terrace. And while there’s no restaurant, breakfast hampers full of West Country goodies are hung on room doors, and the café is open throughout the day for coffee and cake, or a tipple in the courtyard when Bath switches on the sunshine.
